High above Ilam and Panchthar lies Taplejung, home to the sacred site of the Limbu community, Mukkumlung—also known as Pathivara, a name that became “Hindunized” about 20 years ago. For the Limbu people, the indigenous inhabitants of Nepal’s eastern hills, this site has held deep spiritual significance for thousands of years. Even today, it serves as a sacred space for both the Limbu and Hindu communities. Reaching the site requires a steep and arduous trek, with the altitude posing challenges for those with weaker lungs.
Recently, tensions have escalated due to a proposed cable car project. The local community has strongly opposed the idea, arguing that commercialization of their sacred land would lead to deforestation, disrupt small local businesses, and diminish the spiritual essence of the site. Despite these concerns, the company behind the project, led by a banker-turned-businessman, remains determined to proceed. In defiance of protests, hundreds of red rhododendron trees in the hills have already been felled to clear the path for the cable cars. The armed police force has been deployed to guard the site and prevent the protesters from interfering.

The situation has turned dire. In the recent turn of the events, the police force have opened fire on members from the community, leaving four individuals critically injured. They have been transported to Kathmandu for further treatment and are currently stable but in critical condition.
This brings me to reflect on why I sell tea in the first place—it’s about uplifting the community and raising our voices when needed. Regardless of whether there’s tea, this land, the Himalayas and the foothills will always belong to the community and the residents—its engraved ancestors, its people, its heritage, and its identity. The removal of thousands of trees will cause deforestation, putting the survival of the endangered red panda at risk and forcing them out of their habitat. Red pants breed in this habitat.
We believe that both parties find a path to resolution through peaceful negotiation before we lose a soul. We pray for the swift recovery of everyone who is injured or in critical condition.
